Third of U.S. teens with phones text 100 times a day
By Dan Whitcomb Dan Whitcomb Tue Apr 20, 1:17 pm ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – A third of U.S. teenagers with cell phones send more than 100 texts a day as texting has exploded to become the most popular means of communication for young people, according to new research.

The study by the Pew Internet and American Life Project, which offers a glimpse into teen culture and communication, found that texting has risen dramatically even since 2008, eclipsing cell phone calls, instant messaging, social networks -- and talking face-to-face.

The Pew Research Center said that three-fourths of young people between the ages of 12 and 17 now own cell phones and of those that do, girls typically send or receive 80 text messages per day and boys, 30 per day.

"Texting is now the central hub of communication in the lives of teens today, and it has really skyrocketed in the last 18 months," Pew researcher Amanda Lenhart said, attributing the rise in part to payment plans that allow unlimited texting.

The Dow's up but trades are scarce, worrying bulls

Apr 9, 5:18 PM (ET)

By BERNARD CONDON

NEW YORK (AP) - Think Dow 11,000 is a big deal? Think again.

The Dow Jones industrial average briefly hit the milestone Friday for the first time in 18 months before closing at 10,997.

But Wall Street analysts who study key stock index levels say all the attention paid to 11,000 is more like a big distraction. They worry that investors are ignoring another number at their peril: The surprisingly low volume of trading. As stocks have risen over the past year, the volume reflects the vulnerability of a rally riding on the shoulders of relatively few participants.

And that's given pause even to the bulls.

"It worries a lot of us," says Wellington Shields' Frank Gretz, a technical analyst who specializes in pinpointing market levels at which stocks might suddenly rise or fall. He wonders whether the volume signals that the rally could soon peter out, like the big surges that preceded steep declines in the 1930s in the U.S. and in Japan more recently.
Good post. Lots to ponder.
I wonder how many skeletons will be found in this salvage process.
I wonder if it is worth holding those responsible accountable, or if that just slows the process of moving forward.
I wonder who will speak up and if anyone will listen if the rebuilding is also out of proportion.
Finally, I think of the current situation in Haiti--the difficulty in knowing when to move from "search and rescue" to "search and recovery." What will be further destroyed before it can be rebuilt?
Miracles happen, but only sometimes.

Thanks for posting Joan's message. We also lost our 13 year old son, Jack, to this dangerous activity in Oct. 2006. We have tried to bring about awareness and education in our community and state. Some are receptive, others don't believe it is going on in their homes, schools, community. The number of incidences that are wrongly catagorized as "suicides" or ruled as "undetermined" do not reflect the prevalence of this activity among our youth. Thank you, Joan, for reaching out and our thoughts are with you and your family.
I know a little about Humor in the workplace. After all, I've held
over 240 jobs in my life, thus far: However, i can humbly say this;
I Am NOT A Quitter! No! They always had to FIRE my ASS! I would
never think of leaving, without a good reason. I believe in Life and a job, so i let them make the CHOICE for me. Frankly, many of my bosses didn't like my humor. I called it good clean fun, so SCREW them and Her too! She can stick that job up her wahzoo!
When i was in first grade, (the first time), i was so smart in the
basics like math etc., that on the very last day (that year), the Principal, came into the Classroom and personally asked me if i
would mind being held-back a year, so i could help out those
kids that had flunked? Yeah! Twice i did that! EM' BASTARDS!!
